Turkey vs. Bangladesh vs. China: Where Should You Source Your Circular Knitwear?
Updated: May 8

Every sourcing manager eventually faces this question: Turkey, Bangladesh, or China? Each has a legitimate case. This post breaks down the real differences so you can make the decision based on what actually matters to your brand.
The Quick Verdict
China: Lowest unit price, longest shipping, growing ESG scrutiny, tariff risk for US brands.
Bangladesh: Best value for basics at high volume, improving certifications, slower lead times.
Turkey: Premium quality, fast shipping to UK and EU, GOTS certified, well suited for 500 to 5,000 unit runs.
Quality and Consistency
Turkish circular knit fabric sits in a different category. Cotton jerseys, pique and fleece from Turkish mills have tighter construction, better colour fastness and superior shrink control compared to equivalent Bangladesh or Chinese production at the same price point. Four decades of investment in domestic yarn quality and textile R&D shows in the finished garment.
China is competitive on technical fabrics and synthetics. Bangladesh handles basic cotton jersey well at volume, but at the premium end, consistency is harder to guarantee without a dedicated quality control team on the ground.
Lead Times
For UK and EU brands, Turkey has a clear logistical edge. Istanbul to London by truck takes 3 to 5 days. From Bangladesh or China you are looking at 25 to 35 days by sea. For brands managing seasonal collections or reacting to demand signals, that 3 to 4 week gap in transit has a direct impact on working capital and inventory risk.
Certifications and Compliance
For brands selling into major UK and EU retailers, compliance documentation is a hard requirement. GOTS certification for organic cotton is widely available in Turkey. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is standard practice among premium Turkish manufacturers. SEDEX and SMETA audits are routine.
Bangladesh is moving quickly on compliance, particularly BSCI and WRAP. China has certifications available but increasing geopolitical scrutiny from EU and US retailers is making buyers rethink Chinese sourcing even when the unit cost looks attractive.
Total Cost of Sourcing, Not Just Unit Price
Comparing unit prices in isolation gives you an incomplete picture. Turkey's unit price is higher than Bangladesh, typically 20 to 40% depending on the product. But the full landed cost calculation looks different when you factor in everything.
Freight cost: 3 day land delivery from Turkey versus 28 day sea freight from Bangladesh.
Quality rejection rate: lower reject rates mean fewer re-orders and less write-off stock.
MOQ flexibility: smaller minimums reduce dead stock risk.
Tariffs: US brands face significant tariffs from China. Turkey sourced goods are currently at approximately 15% standard rate.
Reputational value: Made in Turkey carries weight with premium consumers in a way Made in China increasingly does not.
When Turkey Is the Right Choice
You sell to UK, EU or premium US consumers who value ethical production.
You need GOTS certified organic cotton or OEKO-TEX compliance.
You are ordering 500 to 5,000 units per style and want consistent quality.
Fast replenishment and proximity to market matter to your business.
You want a long-term manufacturing partner, not a transactional supplier.
